THE ROLE

Breakaway is seeking a highly organized and proactive HR Manager to serve as the central operational partner for our people and HR infrastructure. This role will oversee the day-to-day management of employee operations, including payroll, benefits administration, compliance, and HR systems, while supporting hiring and employee lifecycle processes across the company.

You will be responsible for ensuring our HR operations run smoothly and efficiently as Breakaway continues to grow. This role will manage the administrative and compliance backbone of the company’s people operations while supporting leadership and the recruiting team with hiring, onboarding, and employee management processes.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, resourceful, and comfortable managing both the operational and compliance aspects of HR. This role is best suited for someone who enjoys building structure, improving systems, and serving as a reliable operational partner across teams in a fast-moving company.

This role will work closely with leadership and the recruiting function to ensure Breakaway’s people operations remain organized, compliant, and scalable as the company grows.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Payroll & Compensation

  • Manage bi-weekly payroll for employees and payments for contractors using Rippling
  • Ensure accurate payroll processing, including wages, bonuses, reimbursements, and deductions
  • Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll requirements
  • Coordinate contractor payments and maintain contractor agreements and documentation

Employee Lifecycle Management

  • Help review offer letters and employment agreements
  • Ensure onboarding processes are efficient and help oversee those processes
  • Support off-boarding logistics, including final payroll, documentation, and system access removal

Benefits Administration

  • Manage and administer company healthcare, retirement, and additional benefits programs
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee benefits questions and support
  • Oversee enrollments, changes, and annual benefits renewals
  • Partner with benefits brokers to maintain competitive and compliant offerings

HR Systems & Compliance

  • Support and manage the company’s Rippling HRIS system
  • Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
  • File required documentation with relevant tax and regulatory agencies
  • Coordinate and track required compliance trainings (e.g., harassment prevention, workplace policies)

Hiring & Recruiting Support

  • Partner with the recruiting function to support hiring processes
  • Assist with offer execution for new and existing employees

HR Operations & Employee Support

  • Maintain HR policies and the employee handbook in partnership with the current HR team
  • Support performance review cycles and HR documentation
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee questions and HR-related requests
  • Continuously improve HR processes and systems to support company growth

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4–7+ years of experience in HR operations, people operations, or HR management
  • Experience managing payroll for employees and contractors
  • Experience administering benefits and HR systems (Rippling preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. employment law and HR compliance
  • Exceptional organizational and attention-to-detail skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, growing organization
