Regulatory Counsel, Legal Team (Remote)

Full-Time, Remote / Salary, Exempt / Includes Benefits, Flexible PTO, Equity

Steno is growing! We’re looking for a Regulatory Counsel to join our winning team, which is revolutionizing the court reporting industry every single day. We’re a diverse team from all over the country (and beyond) and we’re crazy about redefining the boundaries of an outdated industry.

In this role, you will lead and manage the tracking, interpretation, and implementation of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and policies that impact our remote deposition and court reporting operations. This role ensures our organization remains fully compliant with varying state regulations and professional requirements across all jurisdictions we serve.

Who are you?

The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of the legal and regulatory environment affecting legal services, ethics, and data privacy. They will serve as a bridge between internal operations, legal counsel, and regulatory bodies—creating clear procedures, maintaining compliant workflows, and mitigating risk in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

On a regular basis you will

  • Research, interpret, and summarize state-specific regulations governing litigation support topics, such as remote proceedings, court reporting, depositions, videography, service of process, electronic filings, notarial laws, and records retrieval; state privacy, data security, and artificial intelligence laws; and laws pertaining to teleconferencing, sales calls, sales emails, and more.
  • Develop and maintain a centralized database or policy tracker of all relevant federal and state rules and regulatory updates.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel to assess regulatory changes and determine business impact.
  • Create and update internal policies and SOPs to reflect jurisdictional requirements.
  • Act as the point of contact for regulatory audits, certifications, and inquiries.
  • Partner with Product, Operations, and Customer Success teams to ensure process alignment with state law.
  • Collaborate with other legal and security personnel to ensure compliance with data-security related laws.
  • Lead training sessions or create compliance documentation to educate staff on jurisdictional variations.
  • Proactively identify compliance risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to company risk assessments and compliance reporting.

You’re gonna crush it if

  • You have a JD from an accredited law school, and two or more years in litigation, regulatory compliance, legal operations, or other state-level policy monitoring roles
  • You have a strong understanding of multi-jurisdictional compliance requirements, and you’re comfortable navigating policy creation amidst ambiguity in the laws across states.
  • You love to research and get into the minutiae of regulations, and you have a proven track record of interpreting statutes, rules, or regulations and translating them into operational guidance.
  • You are excellent at research, you’re a strategic thinker, and you have high-level organizational and analytical skills.
  • You have exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, and you have a get-things-done mindset; you’re not afraid to pick up the phone and call someone on a regulatory board to get an answer
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, you have a collaborative mindset, and the comfort and ability to work and communicate effectively in a fully remote environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom.
  • You have experience working with court reporting firms, law firms, or remote legal service providers (this is a preference, not a requirement)
  • You have familiarity with notarial law, privacy laws (HIPAA, CCPA, etc.), regulatory laws (cold calling/cold email laws -CAN-SPAM), or professional licensing boards (this is a preference, not a requirement)
  • You have familiarity with depositions and legal-related proceedings (this is a preference, not a requirement)
  • You have prior experience building out a regulatory team within a company’s legal department.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary - $145,000 - $160,000
  • Health, Vision, & Dental Benefits - generous company-sponsored health plans for both employees and dependents, including comprehensive vision & dental
  • Wellness/Mental Health - shared benefits to be used among employees and families
  • Flexible Paid Time Off - allowing employees to find balance in their lives
  • Options of Equity - we know our success is nothing without our team
  • Access to a 401k through Guideline
  • A home office setup and a monthly stipend to offset internet and phone costs
